The leafy streets behind the motel contain an interesting variety of residences dating back to the Victorian era.

A gentle stroll around and towards Summer Hill railway station (if you overlook the cars parked) affords a glimpse of what genteel urban life was early last century.

Leichhardt

Just 1 kms towards the city - close enough for a brisk stroll, is the well known "Little Italy" of Sydney.

Home of some of the first espresso coffee bars and Italian restaurants in Sydney, Leichhardt today is a sophisticated modern urban centre with outdoor cafes, stylish pubs and interesting boutiques.

It's main attraction is the Italian Plaza - a modern re-creation of grand piazzas like San Marco in Venice, surrounded by exclusive Italian boutiques, outdoor cafes and award winning restaurants overlooked by modern day 'palazzos'.

You can spend many hours here exploring the boutiques or basking in the sun over a macchiato or lunch or conversing with friends over a meal at night.

Nearby Leichhardt, there is Broadway Shopping Centre, three levels of retail space including Coles, Bi Lo, Kmart, Hoyts, Rebel Sport, Freedom, Harvey Norman, Harris Farm, a Medical Centre and over 125 specialty stores.

Ashfield

Some 2kms in the other direction is the once sleepy suburban centre of Ashfield.

In recent years it has become the centre for Chinese immigrants from the Sichuan province, whose stores and food markets make Ashfield one of the more interesting places in Sydney to shop (useful if you need to get some Asian groceries not available at home).

Ashfield also has a large shopping mall, but of particular interest is the large number of Chinese restaurants open for lunch and dinner. Forget your neighbourhood Chinese (Cantonese) restaurants here. These are the genuine ethnic article.

The food on offer (sit-down or take-away) is regional Sichuan cuisine. Try a different experience in Chinese food - and, if you are adventurous, some of the Sichuan delicacies you will never find in your local take-away. (And at modest prices too!)

The nearby Wests Ashfield Club has great dining and entertainment facilities for visitors to the city and runs a courtesy bus which can pick you up from the motel.
